Drupal talk at CMS Congress

Next Thursday, I'll be spreading the Drupal love at the CMS Congres in Brussels. Feel free to join if you don't have plans already. Should be interesting as many of the big commercial CMS vendors will be present. Let's figure out how they look at Open Source, and whether they agree with the fact that Open Source offers better value proposition for users (customers). They probably just laugh in the face of danger.

Erik:

Ben net vandaag begonnen om Drupal te bekijken, op zoek naar een nieuw CMS. Was al ingeschreven voor CMS Congress, dus ik kom zeker luisteren naar je verhaal. Groeten.

So how did it go?

It was ... different. What struck me most was the abysmal lack of passion among the commercial vendors.

There was also one commercial vendor that was somewhat hostile after we mentioned that Drupal was an Open Source CMS. I was kindly asked not to take one of their product brochures.

I think most of the people were awake during my presentation too.

The lack of love / passion of non-community software is known though I know some reps / sales / presales of commercial software that have a true passion for their products.

Closing down for open source software projects as described is very very bad and typical for a proprietary software vendor that will or should be "closing" down all together (my best guess, Trideon or more likely Smartsite).

I hope that people were not just awake but will stay awake, something like Drupal is superior to many closed CMSes I know. Good thing they asked you to represent Drupal!

BTW: did you interact with the Hippo people? They have a good model using both business and open source combined in a good product.

Pieter:

Your presentation made me wake up, especially after all the basic, repetitive and over-commercial stuff said by the other people on the ... euhm ... conference.

The conference was a dead duck. The presentations were in most case worse then the product flyers.

Your presentation and the one following your presentation kept me awake and were not solely focused on selling the product. I enjoyed it and it made me think even more.

Just strange that FOSS people were using non-Windows computers, and that they had the best designs in the presentations.
