First breath
Yesterday, August 13th, Karlijn gave birth to our son Axl. He weighs 3.4kg and measures 51cm. Mother and baby are doing well. My dad was our gynaecologist and is pictured in the back of the picture.

Enjoy the first days. While there will probably be a lack of sleep, they give you some of the best moments of your life. And if things get tough at night, try to remember that usually, it's only six or seven weeks of hardship :-)

Those first weeks are totally driven by adrenaline which helps you cope with the bit of lack sleep and extra work that comes with the nursing of the little Axl.
On the birth of my eldest son i was a bit surprised that i wasn't overwhelmed with that Great Father-Feeling. I had seen many TV-shows of fathers weeping with joy, and read numerous books telling all-mighty stories about how that new life totally changed their view on life. Instead, I noticed a steadily increasing feeling of comfort, responsibility and joy in the weeks after. And i still feel that way each morning when they wake me up at 6:30 in the morning by jumping on my bed :)
So, enjoy and try to find some time for the three of you alone.

my gratuitous advice which you are free to ignore :-)
get out there! go out to eat in loud restaurants. a breastfeeding or formula feeding kid is totally portable (all they do is sleep, poo, eat and cry!) we took ours to the french patissierie around the corner and loud chinese dim sum restaurants when he was less than 2 weeks old.

Zorg ervoor dat Michiel dit niet leest... Het is nl zo dat ze hem vanaf zijn geboorte al met mij aan het koppelen zijn, tegen wil en dank! Met Anders heb ik ook al eens contact opgenomen, maar de vonk is niet overgeslagen.
Dus voel je nu niet een nieuw slachtoffer, maar ik vind dat wij ook eens moeten afspreken (lees daten) om te zien of het tussen ons klikt.
Ik zal je overladen met kusjes en aaikes en naast je komen liggen als je de slaap niet kan vatten (hoewel we die tijd ook anders kunnen benuttigen ;-)

From the first day my son was born I haven't had a single day of real rest. In those early days, nothing scared me more than a quiet baby. It's only when the baby started crying and his mother got up to check up on him that I was comfortable enough to sleep.
