Consumer Search running Drupal
ConsumerSearch.com has been redesigned and is now running Drupal. The site is a part of the About.com Group, a subsidiary of The New York Times Company.
ConsumerSearch.com gets about 5.5M unique visitors each month (and growing). I don't know what server infrastructure they run on, but with the help from Jeremy at Tag1 Consulting, they configured Drupal to rely heavily on memcached and Drupal's built-in aggressive caching mode. Knowing Jeremy, they are probably trying to serve cached pages from disk, rather than from the database.
Drupal-5, FreeBSD-7, MySQL-5.0, eAccelerator, memcached, and Netscaler caching of .js, .css, and images.
The whole site (actually two versions of it since we're A/B testing the new theme against the old theme) is served from RAM via memcached.
Next up: active/active serving (MySQL and memcached replication) from two data centers, one in NY the other in TX.
November 26, 2008 - 17:20Jeremy Andrews (as well as John VanDyk) also recently became a maintainer of the memcache module on Drupal.org. That's good news for the future of that module!

December 5, 2008 - 08:42do they use views&cck extensively or just enabled them in modules? :) are there any performance problems with these two big things on such a popular website?
December 7, 2008 - 16:25We use on all our website the views module and CCK and there is no performance problem with a volume of 170.000 uniques visitors / day.
