British Council using Drupal

English Online is an initiative created by the British Council to encourage the learning of English in China.

In good Drupal style, the site boasts a number of social networking features such as personal profiles, blogs and forums to connect a community of over 60,000 users. Users can customize content in Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional and English. Other features include video, newsletters, an events calendar, as well as a mobile version of the site at http://m.englishonline.org.cn.

The site, developed by Brightlemon, was also referenced in Gordon Brown's recent visit to China.

The dutch speaking Drupal-community is renewing drupal.be &nl. Last week-end I was sipping a beer with Gaele Strootman. Fanatically trying to write short and catchy: "Wat is Drupal?". I remember we were not happy with the way we wrote about the social networking features.

Now I read this here: " ... a number of social networking features such as personal profiles, blogs and forums to connect a community of over 60,000 users"

I think it is a great small line!
I consider using it, thanks

Thanks Roel

I'm sure our project manager, Aarti will be pleased with that compliment since she coined that phrase...

Someone kindly pointed out that the text only link goes to the mobile version (but with www in front) it should be:
http://m.englishonline.org.cn so I've emailed the administrators in China.

Regards
Leon

This is not the only British Council site using Drupal - the Chevening Scholarship site (www.chevening.com) was re-launched on Drupal in 2008.

I find this rather amusing, since Drupal has decided to American English. I have been annoyed for a while now, by what I consider to be spelling errors. After spending a good while searching for a British Language pack/Translation, I accepted the fact that none existed and resolved myself to the annoyance.

It is really tragic that the Drupal Community have not been able to create a British English language pack. Perhaps I shall get down to creating one.
